Interest in Mathematics, extraordinary logic, ability to think differently, determined efforts to arrive at a solution …. are the key qualities to appear for Maths Olympiad. Students who wish to opt Mathematics as career should tend towards it from initial stages and for them Olympiad is the gateway. National Board Of Higher Mathematics (NBHM) of Dept.of Atomic Energy conducts Mathematics Olympiad with guidance of HBCSE. The winners if Indian Maths Olympiad are sent to International Maths Olympiad. There are stages in Maths Olympiad.
Stage-1: Regional Maths Olympiad (RMO)
Our country is divided into 23 regions in connection with Maths Olympiad and every region has a co-ordinator.
Eligibility:
Junior or Senior Intermediate students are eligible to write this exam. Prodigal students also can appear for this exam with the permission of Regional coordinator.30 candidates are selected from each region. In Andhra Pradesh, we have two regions(Andhra, Telangana) and so 60 candidates will get qualified from A.P. to stage-2 and 690 candidates will get qualified all over the country.
Question Paper:
The duration of the exam is 3 hrs. and it contains 6 or 7 questions. Every question requires in depth knowledge and great analytical skills to be solved. Every thing, like how an answer began and whether the student arrived at the right solution etc., are observed. Including the method to solve the question each and every step counts. Though one could not get the right solution, marks will be awarded for attempt.
Stage – 2 : Indian National Mathematical Olympiad (INMO)
Qualified students in stage-1 are eligible for Stage-2. A national level test is conducted for them. The duration of the exam is 4 hrs. 30 meritorious students are selected in this level and they are qualified for stage – 3.
Stage – 3 : International Maths Olympiad Training Camp (IMOTC)
In this stage six(6) talented students are selected and they are sent for next level.
Stage – 4 : Pre-departure Training Camp (PDT) for IMO
Training will be provided to six qualified candidates of stage-3 for final level, the International Maths Olympiad(IMO).
Stage – 5 : International Maths Olympiad (IMO)
Stage-4 qualified students of every country are the participants of this level. This exam is conducted in every July. Each time one of the member countries hosts the event. There will be two (2) papers in this level and each paper duration is 41/2 hrs.
India has been participating in the IMO since 1989. The Ministry of HRD pays all the expenses of the qualified students for IMO on behalf of India. Every year one of the member countries hosts the event.
Syllabus:
Intermediate level Integers, Geometry, Quadratic Equations & Expressions, Linear Equations, Permutations & Combinations, Algebra, Number Theory. The level of difficulty increases with the increase of stage.
Rewards:
The qualified students of IMO

Can get admission in B.Sc.(Hons.) Maths, Chennai Mathematical Institute.

Can attend interviews conduted by Indian Statistical Institute for B.Stat., B.Math courses without appearing for entrance exam.

Eligible for reputed 'Kishore Vaignanik Prothsahak Yojana(KVPY)'

Can get cash rewards based on talent.

Scholarships from National Board of Higher mathematics for the candidates who join Math courses.
