There is no prescribed syllabus for the written test. The written test aims to test the understanding and analytical ability of the student than the factual knowledge.

(a)  Stream SA:
Students Joining in XI Std. (Science subjects) during the academic year 2008-2009 and having secured a minimum of 75% (65% for SC/ST) marks in aggregate in Mathematics and Science subjects in the X-Standard Board Examination.

(b)  Stream SB:
Students enrolled in the Ist Year Science under-graduate programme (B.Sc./integrated M.Sc.) during the academic year 2008-2009 and having secured a minimum of 60% (50% for SC/ST) marks in aggregate in Mathematics and Science subjects in the XII Standard Board Examination.

(c)  Stream SB+2 :
“Students of Class 12 (+2) of the academic year 2008 - 2009 who are aspiring to join ISSER for Integrated M. S programme for the session August 2009 may also take the KVPY Aptitude Test for the SB Stream provided they secure a minimum of 75% marks (65% for SC/ST) aggregate in Mathematics and Science subjects in X Standard Board Examination

Students pursuing XI, XII or any UG programme (I or II year) in Basic Sciences during the academic year 2008 – 2009 and having secured a minimum of 60% (50% for SC/ST) marks in aggregate in the X Standard and XII Standard Board Examinations. The completed application should carry a science based research project.
        
Stream SP(Engineering) :
Students joining First / Second year B.E./B.Tech./B.Arch during the academic year 2008 - 2009 and having secured a minimum of 60% (50% for SC/ST) marks aggregate in X and XII Standard Board Examinations. Students joining Second year B.E./B.Tech./B.Arch must have passed with a minimum of 60% (50% for SC/ST) in the First year exam of B.E./B.Tech./B.Arch. A hard copy of the Science/Engineering based research project is required along with the application.
        
Stream SP (Medicine):
Students joining First/Second Professional year of M.B.B.S. programme during the academic year 2008 - 2009. Students must have passed XII Standard Board Examination with 75% (65% for SC/ST) marks aggregate in Science subjects or passed First Professional MBBS exam with not less than 60% (50% for SC/ST) marks.
                  
A Copy of the Bio – Medical research project is required along with the application.

When does the KVPY advertisement come in the news papers?

The advertisement for the KVPY Fellowship appears in all the national dailies on May 11/2008 and July 13/ 2008.

Answers to the above questions

We look for evidence of originality and innovativeness in the project. It should be precise, demonstrable if it is an experiment. It should have a new idea or a new concept, if it is an theoretical study. Routine improvement of an existing idea is generally discouraged.

ELIGIBILITY:
These Fellowships are only for Indian Nationals studying in India. The Department of Science and Technology, Government of India, offers attractive fellowships (Rs. 4000 to Rs. 7000 pm) and contingency grants (Four months fellowship) for students studying in Basic Sciences, Engineering and Medicine. Selection to the programme takes into account academic excellence and demonstrated interest in pursuing research career. Selection procedures are different for Basic Sciences, SP (Engineering) and SP (Medicine) and SP(Basic Sciences). All of them, however, include an interview for final selection.

SELECTION PROCEDURE:
Basic Sciences (SA and SB):
After scrutiny of application forms and based on the performance in the Board Examination, aall the eligible candidates from Streams SA and SB will be called for a written aptitude test (multiple choice). The test will be conducted at different centers across the country on 2nd November 2008 (First Sunday). The details of the venue of the aptitude tests will be put on KVPY web to the in October 2008. Based on the performance in the aptitude test candidates will be called for an interview which is the final stage of the selection procedure.
         
Sciences (SP); SP (Engineering) and SP (Medicine):
KVPY applicant is required to submit the project report, chosen and executed by the candidate exclusively for this application.
The projects done jointly with other candidates are not considered for KVPY Fellowship award. Applicant’s creativity and originality should be amply reflected in the project. This project has to be supervised by a teacher/professional in the relevant field. Based on the project submitted and scrutiny of application forms, short listed candidates will be called for an interview, which is the final stage of the selection procedure.
         
The interview will be conducted either at IISc, Bangalore or IIT-Bombay, Mumbai or ICMR, New Delhi during the month of December 2008 or first week of January 2009.
         
Please Note that applications without the project report will not be considered. The project should not be a routine one (such as measuring well known property of materials etc.) The supervising teacher / professional is required to provide a recommendation letter certifying the extent of the applicant’s original contribution to the project.

APPLICATION PROCEDURE:
Request for Application Form:
a.       Each Stream has its own application form. Students who wish to apply for more than one Stream should submit separate applications.
b.       Applicants may apply either by Hard copy or Online. (www.iisc.ernet.in/kvpy).
c.       Application forms may be down loaded from the KVPY website. Those who are unable to do so, may request for a Hard Copy.
d.       Hard copy of the application form can be obtained from KVPY on request by sending a processing fee of Rs. 200/- (Rs. 100/- for SC/ST) by means of remitting Rs. 200 (Rs. 100/- for SC/ST) “to any core banking branches of STATE BANK OF INDIA, payable at all branches in India. Paid into the credit of Administrative Executive, KVPY A/c. No. 10270577392” and send the “pay-in-slip” along with the request, clearly indicating the stream (i.e.SA, SB, SP etc.) on the envelope.
e.       The SC/ST – candidates should provide a copy of the caste certificate issued by a competent authority in the prescribed proforma.
f.        The completed application form along with the
1.      Caste certificate in the case of SC/ST candidate
2.      Project report in the case of SP/Basic Sciences/ Engineering/ Medicine
3.      Copy of the marks statement of the qualifying examination(s), in the case of SP (Engineering), SP(Medicine).
4.      Processing fee of Rs. 200/- (Rs. 100/- for SC/ST) should reach KVPY on or before 12.9.08 (Friday).g. KVPY will not be responsible for postal delays in receiving completed application.h. Last date for receipt of the request for an application form.
